"Jeunes Talents" est un atelier d'IMAGINE en cours d'une durée de 2 mois. Ils sont 5 femmes et 5 hommes d'Éthiopie, du Nigéria et de l'Afrique du Sud suivant des cours théoriques et pratiques en réalisation, écriture, montage sonore et vidéo.


"Young Talents" is the name of a 2 month-long workshop from IMAGINE. They are 5 women and 5 men from Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa getting formal and practical training in filmmaking, writing, sound and video editing.






Durant le FESPACO, ils ont produit, à l'aide de leurs formateurs, des séquences documentaires de qualité professionnelle en des temps records. Deux équipes de cinq membres s'acharnant pendant 6 jours on réussi à produire 3 "newsreels" qui sont maintenant sur l'internet et qui ont également été présenté à la Télévision nationale, RTB, ainsi que dans plusieurs salles de cinéma en avant-première de films en compétition.

NEWSREELS & FILMS !

During the FESPACO, with help from their teachers, they produced newsreels of professional quality in record times. Two teams of five gave it their all for 6 days straight, for a total of 3 newsreels which are now not only on the net, but which were broadcast on national television, RTB, and were projected in theaters as openers before competition screenings.

They also each produced short films which are also available on the site.

J'ai donné des formations en animation numérique à l'Institut. La majorité des participants étaient des jeunes ouagalais avec des connaissances en animation traditionnelle, mais peu ou pas de familiarité avec les logiciels Adobe Photoshop et Adobe After Effects.

I created and directed workshops on digital animation at the Institute. The majority of attendants were young ouagalese with some knowledge of traditional animation, but little or no familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or After Effects.

Jo, Naba et Carole ont eu tout l'espace qu'il voulaient lors du premier atelier qui fut peu populaire.
The first workshop was not well attended, which meant lots of space for Jo, Naba and Carole.

Il y avait des feux d'artifice dans les yeux de certains lorsqu'ils voyait la puissance de l'outil qu'ils apprenaient à utiliser (After Effects!!). J'ai su que les ateliers allaient bon train lorsqu'au 3e jour, les étudiants plus audacieux se sont aventurés dans l'inconnu, découvrant eux-même des menus et des fonctions d'AE que je n'avais pas planifié de couvrir. À mon avis, la curiosité en action est la base de tout apprentissage.

Fireworks were going off in the eyes of those who realized the awesome power of the tool they were learning to use (After Effects!!). I knew the workshops were a success when on the 3rd day, the more daring students ventured into the unknown, discovering by themselves menus and functions of AE which I had not planned to cover. In my opinion, curiosity in action is the starting point of all learning.

Le deuxième atelier a rassemblé 14 participants pendant 5 journées intensives consécutives.
The second workshop was attended by 14 participants for 5 straight intensive days.

Le tout s'est déroulé dans une atmosphère sérieuse mais détendue. On partageait les repas du midi et on restait toujours plus tard que les heures officielles. C'était instructif pour tous, moi y compris, et je vais faire en sorte d'appliquer ce que j'ai appris, en terme de techniques de communication et d'enseignement, dans mes futurs activités professionnelles. Un problème récurrent pour les burkinabè est le manque de moyens pour mettre leur connaissances en pratique. L'Institut IMAGINE peut offrir des solutions adaptés aux besoins de ceux qui démontrent un engagement à la construction de leur carrière en cinéma d'animation.

The workshops plowed on in a serious but relaxed atmosphere. We ate lunch together and stayed in the studio past the official closing time every day. It was instructional for everyone, myself included, and I will apply what I learned in terms of communication and teaching techniques in my future professional activities. A recurring problem for many burkinabè is the lack of opportunities to put in practice what they learn in these kinds of training sessions. The IMAGINE Institute can offer tailored solutions to those who demonstrate a commitment to the construction of a career in film animation.

Sur une bute aux abords de Koudougou, un terrain de soccer central est entouré de bureaux, de salles de cours, de magasins, d'ateliers, de jardins et d'oeuvres d'art; environ 1 km carré de tranquilité, d'action, d'initiatives de développement. Le va-et-vient de gens et de véhicules de toutes sortes est incessant du matin au soir.

On a low hill in the outskirts of Koudougou, a central soccer field is ringed with offices, school rooms, shops, workshops, gardens and artworks: a square kilometer of serenity, action and development initiatives. People and vehicules of all kinds come and go non-stop from sunrise to sunset.

Ventre à terre - Nose to the grindstone

Après une semaine à Koudougou en repairage et recherche, me voici de retour à Ouaga, où le rythme de vie est considérablement accéléré. Tant mieux; il y a du pain sur la planche! J'entre dans la phase "ventre à terre" de mon stage. Un petit aperçu de Koudougou;

After a week of research in Koudougou, I'm back in Ouaga, where the rythm of life is considerably faster. Good thing, too, 'cause I got a lot of work to do. Enter the "nose to the grindstone" phase of my internship. A quick preview of koudougou;

Koudougou est bien connue pour 3 choses:
1. C'est la ville des rebels, où les gens passent à l'action.
2. La qualité du porc grillé et du miel.
3. L'Association Benebnooma.

Beneb = être ensemble / to be together
Nooma = bien / good
Benebooma = l'union fait la force / together we stand

Koudougou is well-known for 3 things:
1. Being a rebel town, where people walk the walk.
2. Its grilled pork and local honey.
3. The Benebnooma Association.

Un marché n'est pas un marché sans bébés sur le dos, animaux en liberté, et robes éclatantes.
A market is not a market without babies in backslings, animals here and there, and dazzling dresses.

Dans la photo ci-bas, je n'étais pas tout à fait content d'être hors de mon lit, après une nuit trop courte qui a suivi une journée de travail trop longue, mais ceci es maintenant mon poste fidèle dans le studio d'animation. La compagnie d'eau en bouteille "Lafi" veut dire "santé / sécurité / bien-être".



I wasn't entirely pleased to be out of bed in the above picture, following a short night's sleep after a long workday, but nevertheless here is my faithful spot in the animation studio. The bottled water company's name "Lafi" means "health / security / well-being".

Du nouveau m'attendait à IMAGINE: un nouveau résident, Mathias, étudiant français en science politique qui s'enrichit présentement d'histoire du cinéma africain, et 2 résidents ovins qui engraissaientt tranquilement avant de rencontrer leur destin lundi le 8 décembre, durant Tabaski (Eid al-Adha), la fête du sacrifice, dit "la fête du mouton" pour les profanes.




Some new arrivals at IMAGINE: Mathias, a French political science student currently amassing knowledge on african cinema history, and 2 ovine residents quietly gaining weight and waiting to meet their fate on Monday December 8, for Tabaski (Eid al-Adha), the festival of sacrifice, or festival of the sheep for the profane.





Je retrouve avec plaisir les rues et les scènes familières de Ouaga.
All in all I'm quite happy to get back to familiar Ouaga streets and scenes.

Routine

L'adaptation, c'est l'art de se dissimuler comme un margouillat et d'apprécier le moment présent.

Adaptation is the art of blending in like a gecko and having fun in the present moment.

Je vais vous surprendre: le Canada, c'est très différent du Burkina Faso. Vous le saviez déjà? Bon. Après un choc d'arrivé considérable pendant la première semaine, le temps commence maintenant à filer; voilà déjà un mois que je suis arrivé à Ouagadougou! Voici donc un aperçu de la routine dans laquelle je me meus.

This will come as a shock to most of you: Canada is very different from Burkina Faso. You already knew? Allright then. After a considerable shock upon arrival which stretched for at least a week, time is now starting to fly by: I've been in Ouagadougou for one month already! So here is a preview of the routine in which I work and play.

On m'a demandé des photos des marchés qui me servent d'épiceries. Ça donnerait en effet des images intéressantes, mais je pourrai tout aussi bien m'accrocher une énorme pancarte autour du cou sur laquelle on pourrait lire "TOURISTE DE PASSAGE TROP RICHE POUR SON PROPRE BIEN". Si je ne me fais pas mieux connaître dans le quartier avant de commencer à demander de prendre des photos, on risque de me charger des prix scandaleux pour mes fruits et légumes, et je ne maîtrise pas encore assez le mooré pour me marchander un prix raisonnable.

En attendant, je dessine souvent ce que je vois. Ci-bas: à Ouaga, on commence l'apprentissage de la moto à l'âge du biberon, les vélos n'ont pas de capacité maximum en poids ou en personnes, et aller jouer dans le traffic n'est pas une expression hostile mais un simple fait quotidien pour les enfants.

Above: In Ouaga, you learn to ride a scooter and walk at the same age, bicycles have no maximum weight or passenger capacity, and playing in traffic is run-of-the-mill for any kid.

I have been asked to put up pictures of marketplaces where I shop for groceries. To take pictures in these places would in fact yield many interesting images, but it would also be the same as hanging a huge sign around my neck with the following inscription on it: "PASSING TOURIST WITH TOO MUCH MONEY FOR HIS OWN GOOD". If I don't get better known in the neighbourhood before starting to ask to take photos, I run the risk of being charged insane amounts for my sundries, and I don't speak enough mooré yet to haggle down to reasonable prices. For the moment, I often sketch what I see.

Entre gars. Se tenir la main est signe de camaraderie, et de rien d'autre. Il n'est pas rare de voir des hommes de tous âges, même les beaux grands jeunes policiers anti-émeute, déambuler ainsi.
Men's men. Holding hands is a sign of camaraderie, nothing else. It isn't rare to see men of all ages, even the young, tall and handsome antiriot policemen, walking nonchalantly like this.

Faites donc les multiplications et les divisions avec un facteur de 5, tenant compte du taux d'échange avec le $CAD, en marchandant à une vitesse de conversation normale :P Vous voulez payez combien pour la papaye?

MOORÉ MATH AT THE MARKET
1200 cfa francs is "kobsii la pisnaase" in mooré, which means "two hundred and forty". I'm not kidding. Now do the multiplications and divisions with a factor of 5, keeping in mind the exchange rate for the $CAD, while bargaining in a natural conversation rythm :P How much would you like to pay for that papaya?

À peu près une fois par semaine, on empile les ordures accumulées devant son pâté de maison et on les brûle à la tombée du jour, histoire de nettoyer un peu le quartier en se réchauffant.

About once a week, it's a good idea to sweep the rubbish lying around the block into a pile and burn it around nightfall. It keeps the neighbourhood clean and heats you up for a while. Prosper, full-time guard, doing some community work.
