Achille Kaboré et Ambroise Samuel fabriquent et peignent des papillons qu'ils vendent une ou deux fois par année aux touristes ou à des vendeurs sur la route. Once or twice a year, the two friends build and paint butterflies like these to sell to tourists and travelling salesmen.


"Ya woto" sort de la bouche de chaque moréphone à chaque jour, au Burkina. Ça veut dire "c'est comme ça", ou "c'est ainsi". Ce dicton aide à accepter des choses qui paraissent incompréhensibles ou injustes. On peut aussi l'employer comme une interjection dans une conversation pour indiquer sa résignation ou son approbation générale.

"Ya woto" is on every moréphone's tongue everyday in Burkina. It means "It's like that" i.e. "that's the way it is". It helps one accept things that might seem incomprehensible or wrong, but it can also be used as "there you go", an interjection indicating resignation or approval in a conversation.

EPILOGUE

Deux amis se reposent sous le toit qui protège un puit d'eau du quartier Wayalghin, mais encore? Il m'arrive de me sentir derrière un mur métaphorique d'incompréhension devant une réalité difficile à comprendre ou accepter, une réalité masquée par mes propres attentes ou références culturelles Nord-Américaines très souvent incompatibles avec celles de l'Afrique de l'Ouest. I sometimes feel behind a metaphorical wall of incomprehension when faced with a reality that is hard to understand or accept, a reality partially hidden from me because of my North American expectations and references which are very often incompatible with those found in West Africa.

Mon stage EPD fut un succès au niveau des formations que j'ai données, des personnes que j'ai aidés dans différents projets reliés au cinéma, et du film que j'ai réalisé. J'ai aussi découvert certains aspects de la société burkinabè qui m'ont ouvert les yeux sur la complexité des problèmes qu'elle s'efforce de résoudre.

My SFD internship was successful concerning the workshops I held, people I helped in the realm of film production, and the short animation I produced. I also discovered certain aspects of burkinabè society which opened my eyes to the complexity of problems it is striving to resolve.

Certes, il existe une tension physique et psychologique dûe au grand nombre de gens qui ont faim et qui n'ont pratiquement rien pour leur donner espoir de jours meilleurs, mais qu'en est-il de ceux qui sont en possession de moyens intellectuels et matériels de poser des gestes concrets et investir de l'intérieur dans le développement du Burkina? Mon contact avec différents habitants du Burkina m'a démontré de plusieurs façons à quel point le respect de l'être humain, est important, quelque soit le sexe, l'appartenance politique, l'âge, le statut social, la profession.



Of course, anyone can feel a strong physical and emotional tension arising from the mass of people who are hungry and have little or nothing to allow them to hope for better days, but what about the many currently living in Burkina who are well-suited materially and intellectually to invest in the development of their own country? My contact with different people from Burkina Faso showed me over and over again to which extent respecting human beings is important, regardless of sex, political preferences, age, social status or profession.



Les principes de bonnes gouvernance tel que décrits entre autres par l'ACDI sont, pour la grande majorité des gens, compris et vus comme des principes sains et souhaitables. Cependant, encore trop de gens, même les plus nantis et les plus instruits, sont au prise avec une précarité quotidienne, réelle ou imaginée, qui rend difficile l'application des principes de gouvernance. Combien de patrons retiennent une partie ou la totalité du salaire promis à un employé? Combien d'employés tente de s'approprier l'effort ou le salaire d'un collègue? Combien de gens bons et doués choisissent, par peur ou par paresse, de s'isoler devant la télévision plutôt que de chercher à identifier et réaliser leurs rêves?



The principles of governance, as described by the CIDA among other organizations, are by far and large easily understood and accepted as healthy and desirable principles. However, too many people, either well-off or dirt poor, are still struggling with an onslaught of real or imagined misery, on a daily basis, that holds back their desire to apply those principles of governance. So many employers holding back either a part or the totality of salaries promised to employees! So many employees trying to get credit or money for a collegue work! So many gifted and talented people chosing to isolate themselves in front of their television, either because of fear or laziness, rather than working to identify their dreams and turn them to reality!


Au Burkina Faso, beaucoup de gens mènent une lutte personnelle difficile pour respecter tous et chacun et travailler tout les jours malgré les difficultés écrasantes du quotidien du pays. Pour l'instant, j'ai l'impression que le camp de ceux qui gagnent cette lutte ne compte pas assez de gens nantis et instruits. J'ai confiance que les burkinabè seront de plus en plus nombreux à choisir d'investir leur imagination, leur temps et leur énergie dans des projets créateurs d'emplois, dans des travaux de réflection positive, plutôt que dans l'acquisition d'objets matériels trop peu utiles à trop peu de gens.

In Burkina Faso, many people are going into a difficult fight every day to meet their objectives while respecting everyone around them, despite crushing odds encountered at every turn of the road. At the moment, I believe that the great number of people who win this fight does not include enough educated and financially secure individuals. I have faith that more and more burkinabè will choose to trust and invest in their imagination, their time and energy in order to develop job-creating and positively-minded projects, rather than running the rat race in order to acquire material goods too little useful to too few people.

"Jeunes Talents" est un atelier d'IMAGINE en cours d'une durée de 2 mois. Ils sont 5 femmes et 5 hommes d'Éthiopie, du Nigéria et de l'Afrique du Sud suivant des cours théoriques et pratiques en réalisation, écriture, montage sonore et vidéo.


"Young Talents" is the name of a 2 month-long workshop from IMAGINE. They are 5 women and 5 men from Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa getting formal and practical training in filmmaking, writing, sound and video editing.






Durant le FESPACO, ils ont produit, à l'aide de leurs formateurs, des séquences documentaires de qualité professionnelle en des temps records. Deux équipes de cinq membres s'acharnant pendant 6 jours on réussi à produire 3 "newsreels" qui sont maintenant sur l'internet et qui ont également été présenté à la Télévision nationale, RTB, ainsi que dans plusieurs salles de cinéma en avant-première de films en compétition.

NEWSREELS & FILMS !

During the FESPACO, with help from their teachers, they produced newsreels of professional quality in record times. Two teams of five gave it their all for 6 days straight, for a total of 3 newsreels which are now not only on the net, but which were broadcast on national television, RTB, and were projected in theaters as openers before competition screenings.

They also each produced short films which are also available on the site.

J'ai donné des formations en animation numérique à l'Institut. La majorité des participants étaient des jeunes ouagalais avec des connaissances en animation traditionnelle, mais peu ou pas de familiarité avec les logiciels Adobe Photoshop et Adobe After Effects.

I created and directed workshops on digital animation at the Institute. The majority of attendants were young ouagalese with some knowledge of traditional animation, but little or no familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or After Effects.

Jo, Naba et Carole ont eu tout l'espace qu'il voulaient lors du premier atelier qui fut peu populaire.
The first workshop was not well attended, which meant lots of space for Jo, Naba and Carole.

Il y avait des feux d'artifice dans les yeux de certains lorsqu'ils voyait la puissance de l'outil qu'ils apprenaient à utiliser (After Effects!!). J'ai su que les ateliers allaient bon train lorsqu'au 3e jour, les étudiants plus audacieux se sont aventurés dans l'inconnu, découvrant eux-même des menus et des fonctions d'AE que je n'avais pas planifié de couvrir. À mon avis, la curiosité en action est la base de tout apprentissage.

Fireworks were going off in the eyes of those who realized the awesome power of the tool they were learning to use (After Effects!!). I knew the workshops were a success when on the 3rd day, the more daring students ventured into the unknown, discovering by themselves menus and functions of AE which I had not planned to cover. In my opinion, curiosity in action is the starting point of all learning.

Le deuxième atelier a rassemblé 14 participants pendant 5 journées intensives consécutives.
The second workshop was attended by 14 participants for 5 straight intensive days.

Le tout s'est déroulé dans une atmosphère sérieuse mais détendue. On partageait les repas du midi et on restait toujours plus tard que les heures officielles. C'était instructif pour tous, moi y compris, et je vais faire en sorte d'appliquer ce que j'ai appris, en terme de techniques de communication et d'enseignement, dans mes futurs activités professionnelles. Un problème récurrent pour les burkinabè est le manque de moyens pour mettre leur connaissances en pratique. L'Institut IMAGINE peut offrir des solutions adaptés aux besoins de ceux qui démontrent un engagement à la construction de leur carrière en cinéma d'animation.

The workshops plowed on in a serious but relaxed atmosphere. We ate lunch together and stayed in the studio past the official closing time every day. It was instructional for everyone, myself included, and I will apply what I learned in terms of communication and teaching techniques in my future professional activities. A recurring problem for many burkinabè is the lack of opportunities to put in practice what they learn in these kinds of training sessions. The IMAGINE Institute can offer tailored solutions to those who demonstrate a commitment to the construction of a career in film animation.

Sur une bute aux abords de Koudougou, un terrain de soccer central est entouré de bureaux, de salles de cours, de magasins, d'ateliers, de jardins et d'oeuvres d'art; environ 1 km carré de tranquilité, d'action, d'initiatives de développement. Le va-et-vient de gens et de véhicules de toutes sortes est incessant du matin au soir.

On a low hill in the outskirts of Koudougou, a central soccer field is ringed with offices, school rooms, shops, workshops, gardens and artworks: a square kilometer of serenity, action and development initiatives. People and vehicules of all kinds come and go non-stop from sunrise to sunset.

Entre métallurgie et beaux-arts, de nombreuses sculptures donnent du piquant au site de l'Association. Many metal sculptures help students merge work and play, and they spice up the landscape nicely.
